I am nowhere near where I want to be... but I will get there. Just like everybody else, I want to feel better, look better, and play harder. Realizing that I wasn't reaching those goals was the wake-up call I needed.
During lockdown, I took a significant step by building a home gym, continually adding to it. The exercise part is the fun part for me—lifting weights, hiking, surfing, Peloton rides—I enjoy it all. The real struggle is controlling my diet. But like I said, I will get there. I will keep learning and trying new things until I've reached that healthy place.
I've learned that even on the busiest of days, taking 15-20 minutes for yourself is okay. Find something you love to do and do it. Now, I keep exercise equipment at the office, near the couch, and in my travel bag. I know that movement is important. I don't have to commit two hours in a gym to feel good. I can hike the canyon, ride the Peloton, lift weights, jump rope for 20 minutes, or take a cold plunge.
Joining a team or group has been one of the best motivators for me. I restarted our men's soccer team, and it's been great fun. Whether we win or lose, we're sweating and having fun with friends. I also started Pilates to become more flexible. It has helped a lot and allowed me to perform better while surfing and playing soccer.
Documenting my journey on social media (@edwardarthurlaw) has been a fun way to share my progress and stay accountable. This journey is about more than just reaching a physical destination—it's about embracing the process, finding joy in movement, and continuously pushing myself to new heights.
