MATJAŽ BELŠAK

Medvode, Slovenia

Growing up, I was captivated by strength sports on YouTube. Watching those incredible feats of power and athleticism inspired me to start lifting weights. At 15, in 2007, I began my fitness journey, determined to transform my body and achieve something significant. Lifting gave me a goal, a plan, and a sense of purpose. It was a project where I was the boss, responsible for my progress and success.

In Slovenia, a country with little history in strength sports, I managed to rise to the top of the strongman scene. Despite having almost no team or special associations to support me, I stayed at the top for several years, relying mostly on my own efforts and determination.

However, my journey hasn't been without its challenges. I had a dislocated hip at 13, and by 2018, I started experiencing significant problems with it. The condition worsened rapidly, and by 2020, I competed in my last professional high-level competition. After taking a break, I underwent hip surgery, receiving a total replacement of my right hip.

Despite these setbacks, I remain active in the fitness world. I continue to train and compete at a lower level, participating in events like Slovenia's Strongest Man and smaller competitions around the area. I also ventured into MMA, competing in 2022 and 2023.

Beyond competing, I am deeply involved in the fitness community. I serve as the president of a sports club, organizing several competitions each year, including Slovenia's Strongest Man. I own a small gym, coach aspiring athletes, and am the SBD Slovenia distributor.

Although my hip isn't at 100% flexibility as it was in my prime, it feels okay, and I continue to push myself within my limits. My journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the relentless pursuit of goals despite obstacles.
