I’ve always believed in the power of vision, discipline, and relentless dedication to achieving greatness, not just in fitness but in every aspect of life. My fitness story is deeply intertwined with my philosophy of living by the "6 F’s to Success"—Faith, Family, Fitness, Finance, Fun, and Fulfillment. For me, fitness is a cornerstone of this equation, one that has shaped not only my body but also my mindset and my purpose.

I began my fitness journey back in junior high, playing sports like football, basketball, baseball, and track. In high school, basketball became my passion. I was known for my skills on the court, earning an MVP trophy and a spot on the 1979 County All-Star Team. Little did I know, the habits of discipline I developed through sports would lay the foundation for a lifetime of fitness.

In 1981, I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from a small Central California town called Earlimart. My girlfriend, who later became my wife, enrolled at UC Berkeley, and I found myself drawn to the vibrant sports culture on campus. Hanging out at the sports facility, I played pick-up basketball with some incredible athletes, including future legends like Ron Rivera, Kevin Johnson, Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, and Manute Bol. I even dabbled in boxing for a while. Although I had a natural talent and a knockout punch, I didn’t have the heart of a fighter. But the discipline and rigorous workouts taught me what it truly takes to be fit.

In the early ’80s, basketball was my mainstay, but life threw me some challenges. Struggling to find my path and grappling with recreational drug use, I needed something to ground me. In 1986, I found my focus in weightlifting. For me, it wasn’t just about building muscle; it was a way to prove to myself that I was on the right track. Since then, I’ve never looked back. Gym workouts became a staple of my life, except for a brief period when my daughter was born, during which I worked out at home. Cardio has always been an essential part of my routine, whether it’s playing basketball or riding my stationary bike. Through it all, I’ve maintained an undefeated record—I’ve never let an excuse keep me from a workout.

In my twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties, I looked good, but I always felt I could do better. I lifted weights three times a week and played basketball on Saturdays, but to truly see my abs and feel my best, I knew I had to step up my game. In 2021, I decided to take my fitness journey to the next level.

I’ve always been an early riser, so waking up at 3:30 a.m. to start my day with prayers and meditation felt natural. By 4:30 a.m., I’m at Anytime Fitness Spa, ready to put in the work. My current routine includes six days of weight training—three focused on my upper body and three on my lower body—each session lasting about an hour. Additionally, I do a 45-minute cardio session at home five days a week. I’ve dialed in my nutrition and embraced this lifestyle wholeheartedly.

At 63 years young, I can confidently say I’m in the best shape of my life. I’ve hit my goal weight and transformed into what I like to call a “Skinny Minny with Bennies”—a lean, ripped version of myself with all the benefits that come from consistent dedication. When I look in the mirror, I see the results of years of effort, and I tell myself, “Hey OG, you look awesome. Keep up the good work.”

Fitness has given me so much more than a strong body. It’s been a source of stability, confidence, and empowerment throughout my life. It’s allowed me to navigate challenges, maintain focus, and inspire others. Whether it’s through my work with the I.H.D. Movement, my role as a husband and father, or simply my daily workouts, I strive to be a positive force for those around me.

For anyone reading this, know that it’s never too late to start your journey. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to reach the next level, the key is consistency, dedication, and a belief in yourself. Fitness is more than just physical—it’s a lifestyle that transforms every aspect of who you are. Keep pushing, keep striving, and remember: greatness is always within reach.
