PAUL BLANE

Southport, UK

Since I was a youngster, I've been a whirlwind of activity, always pushing myself to the limit. It all began at the tender age of 8 when I made a bold decision: to pursue a career as a professional jockey. In 1995, that dream became a reality when, in my inaugural race, I rode to victory at 33-1 odds. However, my tenure in this arena was short-lived. The relentless struggle to maintain lightweight proved futile as my natural body weight continued to increase. By 1997, I bid farewell to the racing world, embarking on a new path as a care worker. This marked the inception of my journey as an entrepreneur, a title I've grown into over the years. Fast forward to the present day, and I find myself at the helm of six businesses spanning the UK and Europe.

Despite the demands of my bustling professional life, I've always sought solace in physical challenges. From marathons to triathlons, boxing to mountaineering, I've dabbled in a myriad of high-level endurance events. Yet, at the age of 45, I felt the urge to embark on a new adventure.

Bodybuilding had long piqued my interest. Witnessing the awe-inspiring physiques of gym-goers fueled my curiosity. Unlike mine, their bodies boasted definition and strength. I pondered whether it was too late to sculpt my physique, to cultivate a six-pack, broad lats, and a robust chest.

Determined to pursue this newfound passion, I sought the guidance of Will Barton, the reigning NABBA Mr. Britain in Men's Physique. Together, we embarked on a relentless 12-month journey to realize my vision: to step onto the competition stage. As you've likely gathered by now, I'm not one to do things by halves.

A year later, at the age of 46, I graced the stage at a PCA competition just last week (March 2024). While I may not have secured a placement in Men's Physique, every moment was a thrill.

Now, a new plan unfolds before me. I'm setting my sights on the NABBA Mr. Universe 2024 lineup. More shows, a roadmap to qualification—the journey ahead brims with promise.

So, what lessons has bodybuilding imparted?

  1. Absolute discipline is paramount.
  2. Consistency and unwavering commitment are non-negotiable.
  3. Nutrition, hydration, and recovery are as vital as training sessions.
  4. Sacrifices are inevitable.
  5. Surrounding oneself with like-minded, ambitious individuals fosters growth.
  6. These are but a few of the myriad lessons learned.

How has this journey transformed my life?

At 45, thoughts of retirement loomed large. Exit strategies beckoned, and notions of aging crept in, casting shadows over my four pillars of success: family, work, education, and social activity.

Yet, over the course of 12 months, the transformation has been profound. I've transitioned from a state of stagnation to one of vibrancy and purpose.

In my family life, I've become a beacon of positivity, inspiring my wife and children to embrace an active lifestyle. Together, we've forged bonds of support and camaraderie.

At work, I've rekindled my passion for leadership, driving innovation and fostering a culture of excellence.

In education, I've reignited my thirst for knowledge, devouring information voraciously and sharing insights with newfound zeal.

Socially, I've shed old habits, surrounding myself with individuals who uplift and inspire.

Would I recommend this journey? Without a doubt. Life has never felt more invigorating. And it's all thanks to the world of bodybuilding—a realm where camaraderie reigns supreme, and the possibilities are endless.

But enough writing; there's a training session awaiting me. Follow along as my journey unfolds. The best is yet to come!
